The Deer at the Swimming Pool
James Dickey
There was one summer when I was a child
I saw a deer come to the swimming pool
Of a house where we were staying.
It was a place in the mountains.
The deer stood at the shallow end,
Looking at its face in the blue water.
I was afraid. I threw water at it
From a little distance. The water hit
The deer's side, darkened the hair.
It looked at me, then turned
And went back into the trees.
I have never forgotten that wet place
On the deer's flank. I think of it now.
Why did I do that? The deer did not want
To drink. It only wanted to see
Itself in the blue of the pool.
And I, from fear, threw water
And spoiled that image, and wet the deer.
That wet spot has stayed with me all my life.
It is still there, on the deer's side,
In the forest, in the mountain summer.
I cannot go back to that pool.
But the deer can, and does, I believe,
And looks down, and sees its face,
And the water is clear, and the image returns.
Only I am gone, and my hand
That threw the water is a man's hand now.
But the deer's wet hair is still wet.
It will never dry.
